To A Girl

This was written about the girlfriend of an acquaintance. We’d barely met, but his story of her was so spectacular that it was hard not to notice and not to feel anything at all. After this, I began to think – and realize – that her personal struggle is not unlike my own. So for her, I wrote “To A Girl”. Enjoy.

You say you want to make memories,
Holding photographs inside your head – for you,
Sweet and black tinged, pink and mood indigo.

The grand is never the grandest for you;
I know, for I feel the same way too –
Bitter and blue tinged, violet and mood indigo.

Your head is a whole new universe -
Inside, a kaleidoscope of multicolored hue
With moments plastered on mental walls of indigo.

You live inside, you love inside, and you die inside,
Chased by chimera and nightmares on hooves.
Listen to the signposts, venture beyond indigo.

Now step outside and regard the rose so real;
Smell its fragrance, feel the thorns, sharp and true…
And take another step. Into life you must go.
