Prayers in Exile

This was written for Read Write Word prompt #6 on Read Write Poem. Enjoy.

prayers in exile

and the rain keeps falling down

little girl, barely a woman
budding breasts too soon, ahead of the clock
wandering
wandering
inside of an envelope of night
unseen, except by the creatures who would
devour her
teachers of hardness, lust, and abandoned prayers
hope gone stale
wandering in endless night
God doesn’t exist here
except in fairy fantasy dreams like a
far-off Santa Claus
grinning, open-armed, yet out of reach

Handle With Care

This was written is response to Rob Kistner sharing a favorite thing, in this case a song, “Fragile”, by Sting. I was moved and was prompted to write this in response for Read Write Poem #57: ‘Tis the Season for Sharing. Enjoy.

Favourite Things

On Read Write Poem this week, the Prompt is “‘Tis the Season for Sharing”. We were encouraged to share a favourite song, image, poem, etc., for others to read and maybe use as a prompt to write a poem.

I chose a song by R.E.M., “Texarkana” (which appears on the album Out of Time to present as my favourite for this exercise. Below you can find the link to the lyrics and a YouTube video of the song and an audio version of the song on Last.fm. Enjoy.

This piece was written for one of the Read Write Poem prompts this week – this one for Read Write Word #5 (visit the link to the prompt to check it out). The Wordle prompts are collections of words; you may write using one, some, or all of them.

Enjoy the poem.

City Lights by Rick Mobbs; original available on his blog, “Mine Enemy Grows Older”

This was written in response to Rick Mobbs’ painting, “City Lights”, pictured above. While not a prompt poem, this is ekphrastic in nature. Enjoy.

A.D. Winans at “Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers”

Gentle readers, I felt the need to share this post from Scot Young’s blog “Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers” about poet A.D. Winans. Mr. Winans talks about himself, his poetry, Beat poetry, San Francisco, and present one of his own works, “Poem for Ginsberg”, which is absolutely smokin’. A must read.
