April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

I call you up with cruelty. I break your back
with rain. My fingers dig into your flesh
and pull life upward from the thin cloak
of death that you put on last winter. You can’t
fool me.
You just look brown, tired, and
