“This Bird Has Flown” Featured on Scot Young’s Poetry Challenge #1

I participated in Scot Young’s Poetry Challenge #1, which was to listen to Charles Bukowski’s “Bluebird” and then write a poem based on it (prose poetry or flash fiction also included). I contributed “This Bird Has Flown” to the challenge. You can read it here:

American Sentence #1

I discovered American Sentences on the blogs of Scot Young and Nathan Moore. The American Sentence is a poetic form created by the late Allen Ginsberg. According to the American Sentences website, they are “haiku-length poems that Allen suggested be limited to 17 syllables, like haiku in Japanese and like the Heart Sutra in Buddhism”. Inspired by Scot and Nathan, I will start composing and posting American Sentences here on Raven’s Wing Poetry. For your reading pleasure this week, I give you American Sentence #1:

Souls connect through fiber optic conduits carrying silent words.

Columbus Arts Festival Poetry Slam

I am participating in the Columbus Arts Festival Poetry Slam on Saturday! The slam will be happening on Saturday, June 7, between 8:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. at the Poetry Corner, which is at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Gay Street, right across the street from the Columbus College of Art and Design in downtown Columbus. Admission is free for the festival. So if you’re in Columbus, come out Saturday night and watch me get my slam on! And for that matter, come out for the poets at the Poetry Corner too (various performance times Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). It should prove to be an awesome weekend of poetry!

Another Challenge: Narrative Poetry

As I’ve mentioned before, I believe in trying new things and stretching myself to grow as a poet. So….when I read this post on Strong Verse’s blog about narrative poetry, I was curious and intrigued. I mostly write lyric poetry, as readers of this blog are aware, but I have certainly not shut the door on narrative poetry.

The idea is to write a narrative poem which tells a story (a bit redundant I am in saying this, but I felt I needed to) hovering somewhere between 250 - 300 lines. A challenge for me, since my poetry tends to run 40 lines or less, and as I mentioned, I write more of what is probably classified as lyric poetry. But there are many stories to tell. I intend to tell at least one of them. I will keep you posted.

The Chaucerian Roundel Experiment

An Experiment

I am going to try something new for the next few weeks. I’ve been wondering what I can do to grow as a poet, and to me, the obvious thing to do first would be to try out poetic forms and styles other than what I normally write in. The Chaucerian Roundel fascinates me, and I’ve seen good examples of it used by other folks, including Half Way Tree. So this week, I will attempt to write only Chaucerian roundels, and the best poems of this week’s experiment will be posted on this blog. I also hope to generate some material to read at open mic this week. We’ll see what happens.

Revolution Progress Update, 5/1/08

Well, yesterday was the last day of April, and I’ve written my 100 poems. 50 of them are posted here. The other fifty are chapbook material or stuff I am leaving aside to continue development on.

Overall, I’m glad I took the challenge. If nothing else, it forced me to produce. It forced me to write and really rethink the idea of what I could write about. I found ideas mostly jumping in front of me and presenting themselves easily. And I was able to silence my inner critic long enough to stop her from rejecting an idea before I wrote once I kept my focus on the 100 poem goal.

Oddly enough, I ended up with a mean case of writer’s block yesterday evening. With five left to write. I don’t know why - perhaps being so near to the goal line. Thank God, I got past it.

I have to thank David. This whole thing was his idea.

I want to do this again next year.
