February 2010 Read Write Poem Mini-Challenge Poem #4: You Don’t See It
You don’t see it, but some days
I drag moonlit danger behind me like a veil of milky dust
casting itself off of my crown. I balance
armies of fire on the backs of my arms and
use them for wings. I hear
the stars rubbing their legs together for the want of music
and hanging gold fiddled notes on Venus’ earlobes. They
chime, making love in the solar wind.
I strap bass lines onto my back;
wrap chain mail angels around my chest;
strap thunderclouds to the soles of my feet;
and I dance.

Synesthesia
This was written for Read Write Word #15 (and NaPoWriMo #27 – I am soooo behind!). These were words that I donated to RWP a while back. This was also inspired by Sarah’s poem written for the same prompt.
A little background information is in order: synesthesia is “a neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway”, i.e. hearing colors (the definition was quoted from Wikipedia. I am heard that it can occur by itself (although I’m not entirely sure), but I am aware that individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome can experience synesthesia. I’m inclined to think that stuff lying within the Autism Spectrum is maybe less of a disorder and perhaps evident of neurodiversity within the human race (although I’m up for debate and discussion on the subject).

And now, on to the poem. Enjoy.

colors, that songs were leaking
tones of liquid pigment into
your ears. Like B flat – for you,

Vicious
When poets get angry, they write. I suggest you read this and this to understand the following.

—————————————————————-
in the animal kingdom it’s not uncommon
to seen bared teeth and sharpened claws
in the brief pause
before the pack kills a weaker member
it seems that we humans
instead of killing a weaker member
simply dismember
him by voting him out of our pack
then we wipe our consciences clean
with a foul
filthy towel
assuaging ourselves with excuses and lies –
disgusting -
and we have little playground boys and girls
standing spiritually stark naked
stripped of dignity
holding the expired end of a match
after being burned by
vicious fires of hatred
now ain’t this just grand
twenty-first century progress
we are so advanced and sophisticated
that instead of ripping little children to shreds
leaving them with raw wounds that never close
now we can simply vote them out of class
