Roller Coaster

This was written off of a prompt from Simply Snickers, a site with prompts for poets. The catch? You must rhyme in some way. (I thought I had to rhyme, but I guess you don’t. Oh well. Still, I like this poem.)

I chose the Chaucerian roundel, again (easy use of forms is why I intend to master more of them) to do this thing. The prompt was to write a poem using the words “roller” and “coaster” in it. So I took the metaphoric meaning of a roller coaster instead of the literal. Enjoy.

For something other than a emergency meeting -
You lashed us all with a verbal beating

That left us stung and smarting. Hence
Why our friendships with you are now fleeting;
You called us out to this spot by pretense.

The pain is too great for any recompense
You’d give: we sat as you kvetched on, eating
Three hours up in false blame and mistreating.

An Experiment

I am going to try something new for the next few weeks. I’ve been wondering what I can do to grow as a poet, and to me, the obvious thing to do first would be to try out poetic forms and styles other than what I normally write in. The Chaucerian Roundel fascinates me, and I’ve seen good examples of it used by other folks, including Half Way Tree. So this week, I will attempt to write only Chaucerian roundels, and the best poems of this week’s experiment will be posted on this blog. I also hope to generate some material to read at open mic this week. We’ll see what happens.
