What is Wet Ink, you ask? It is an erotic poetry night held quarterly, hosted by Donielle Monique and Vernell Bristow of Writer’s Block.

Writer’s Block First Draft Night: Friday, August 15

It’s about that time again…Writer’s Block Poetry is holding their First Draft Night on Friday, August 15th at 8:00 P.M. at Kafe Kerouac!

There will be a featured poet and there will also be an open mic during the show. This exciting poetry night, hosted by WB’s own Joanna Schroeder, is for NEW POETRY ONLY - stuff that has *never* been read in public before - so come out to hear great new poetry or to read your OWN never before performed work! Cover is $3.

Poetry In The Park: Saturday, August 2

I have been trying to spotlight poetry events in the Central Ohio area. I just recently found out about Poetry in the Park. Here is some more info:

Poetry In the Park will be holding its monthly summer show on Saturday, August 2, 2008. Music will begin at 6:45 P.M., and the featured poet, Steve Abbot, will perform at 7:30 P.M. An open mic will follow.

The event is FREE and takes place at Goodale Park at the corner of Buttles Avenue and Park Street in Columbus, OH.

Please keep in mind that if attend, you can bring a picnic dinner, but you will also need to bring your own seating (i.e. chairs or blankets).

“Say That” Poetry Night on July 19th in Gahanna, OH

If you are in the Central Ohio area, I encourage you to come to Say That on July 19 at 7 PM. What is Say That, you ask? Say That is a one night poetry event hosted by Kim Hight, who was a featured poet at Poetry in the Spring this past May at Ohio State University. The feature poet at Say That is none other than Vernell Bristow of Writer’s Block Poetry! Vernell is an awesome poet to hear, and there will be an open mic as well. And by the way, there will be appetizers served. So whether you want to perform, listen to awesome poetry, or BOTH, I would encourage you to come out to this one-night only event! I will be there as well, and I will also have my new chapbook there if you’d like to pick up a copy.

Columbus Arts Festival Poetry Slam

I am participating in the Columbus Arts Festival Poetry Slam on Saturday! The slam will be happening on Saturday, June 7, between 8:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. at the Poetry Corner, which is at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Gay Street, right across the street from the Columbus College of Art and Design in downtown Columbus. Admission is free for the festival. So if you’re in Columbus, come out Saturday night and watch me get my slam on! And for that matter, come out for the poets at the Poetry Corner too (various performance times Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). It should prove to be an awesome weekend of poetry!

My fiance and I attended the finals for this year’s Rust Belt Poetry Slam last night. An Open Mic Virgin No More!

In my introduction when I first started this blog, I said I would share the occasional personal experience or insight. In this vein, I will talk about my first open mic experience.

This past Wednesday, my fiance and I attended our first poetry open mic night. I’d had an idea to find open mic poetry events around Central Ohio, observe what goes on, and then when I felt a little less chicken, I would get up there and read myself.
