Chauncey Beaty Features @ Writer’s Block First Draft, Friday, March 19, 2010

From Joanna Schroeder, the host of Writer’s Block First Draft:

“Fresh off the WoWps finals stage – First Draft is proud to present a feature of all new work by hometown favorite Chauncey Beaty. If you’ve been writing all week off the endorphin high of seeing Columbus’ first national poetry event storm our local stages last weekend – bring out what you’ve got and share it with an audience that loves new poems and new poets!

Chauncey Beaty is an Atlanta-based poet (and OSU alum) who rocked the Women of the World poetry slam all the way to the final round of the competition. She is also an artist who uses her words to effect change in the world through her dedication to writing. Her annual Hope Springs Writing Retreat has been described as a nourishing and transformative experience for the women who attend. Come out to experience the intensity of her work and stay for her lightning fast metaphors. Some people win the Super Bowl and then go to Disneyland. Chauncey Beaty was crowned the third-best female slammer at WoW and she is coming to First Draft. Come out and hear what new change is jangling in her pockets.

Chauncey’s feature will be followed by the traditional First Draft Open Mic where new poems and new poets are always welcome. Bring us the new and shiny, or the dusty journal you had stashed behind the couch. If it is new, or has never been performed before, we will give you and your piece mad love and applause.

Hope to see you there!”

Writer’s Block First Draft: New Year Nuku Show, Friday, January 15

Haiku Nuku Flyer

January’s First Draft is the annual New Year, Nuku show!

Featuring at this year’s Nuku show on Friday, January 15 will be Writer’s Block’s own Scott Woods with all new, never performed haiku.

According to host Joanna Schroeder, Scott Woods “is only the second poet to take up the challenge of an all new haiku feature, but if you’ve been to any of his 24 hour poetry events, you know that he is talented enough and also crazy enough, to rock it like no other. I could tell you about all the amazing poetry he has written in the thirteen years he’s been running poetry nights in this town, but what you need to do is come out and see what he does when he stares seventeen syllables in the face for an entire new poem feature.”

His feature will be followed by a haiku death match with several local poets. First, there will be a sacrificial round which “is going to be hot enough to melt the snow off the streets – as it is Mother vs Son with Teri Collins and Alex Stinnett going head to head.” The death match that follows is a three-round battle and only one will walk out a winner. As of press time, the death match poets are:

JJ Bowes
Nick Brown
Barbara from the Ohio Poetry Association
Nicole Nicholson (yes, yours truly)
Maranda Noble
Link Schreiber
Tyronne Russell
Rachel Wiley

And following the battle will be the First Draft Open Mic. If you want to get your new, never-performed work to the stage, this is the place to do it.

Cover is $3 for the night. Show begins at 8:00 P.M. Do NOT miss this sure to be hot night of poetry!

Rachel Reid Features at Writer’s Block First Draft, Friday, December 18, 2009

This month’s Writer’s Block is featuring Columbus poet and WB’s own Rachel Reid.

As First Draft host Joanna Schroeder puts it, Rachel “is a Cleveland native who attended her first poetry reading in 1997 and has been hooked ever since. After moving to Columbus in 2004, Rachel Reid became a regular at the Writers’ Block poetry night and has been known ever since as a local poet, salsa dancer, and crowd-pleasing emcee… When Rachel shares her work, the experience of listening is like watching a flock of white doves take flight – it is unexpected, entrancing, and unforgetable.”

Her feature, as always, will be followed by the traditional First Draft open mic.

For those not familiar with the night, First Draft is a poetry night where new poems and new poets are always welcome. Cover is $3 for the night. Come on out and share your *new* poetry — and be prepared for an awesome feature!
