City Lights by Rick Mobbs
City Lights by Rick Mobbs; original available on his blog, “Mine Enemy Grows Older”

This was written in response to Rick Mobbs’ painting, “City Lights”, pictured above. While not a prompt poem, this is ekphrastic in nature. Enjoy.

Dead

This poem was written as a (kinda) response to Rob Kistner’s poem, “Up From Hell” over on his blog Image and Verse and is for Read Write Poem Prompt #55 – Free For All. It is a sort of stream-of-consciousness piece, so bear with me if it meanders a bit. Enjoy.

An Open Letter to Patricia Smith

This, thought not written for today’s Meme Express prompt, ended up fitting in with the prompt’s theme, “forgetfulness” – a nice instance of coincidence…or did I pick up on something universal in the air? I don’t know. This triple sonnet was namely written as a poetic reaction to Patricia Smith’s poem, “Building Nicole’s Mama”.

rusty-kneed little girl with braid ends sealed
by fire who asked you how to reclaim
her dead mother through words, how to reveal

Reticence

This was written for the Matinee Muse prompt “Guardian” on Writer’s Island…and as a poetic reaction to “Stranger” and “To The Stranger”. Since I wrote the first two poems, I wondered how the mysterious big city import would respond to the speaker…and wrote this as his response in a hay(na)ku chain. Enjoy.

Universe

I wrap myself in the blanket
of verbal confrontations
streamed in electrical data pulses
on parallel fiber optic highways

fiber optic bright burning data lights
on a blue-black background blanket
words exploding and shooting
like stars

I grab them in my hands
to examine them for later use
to line up side by side with other stars
to form a galaxy of debate
swirling in the human cosmos

I may crash and burn
but I’ve enjoy the ride
as I learn
what the universe of human thought
is made of

Blind Mary by vhm-alex

“Blind Mary” by *vhm-alex

For those of you who have been readers for a while, you’ll know that I have written some poetic reactions either to poems of other writings. David Pitchford wrote Dionysus Rising on his blog. This is my response. Enjoy.

I am muse.
They call me Calliope.
I break open my chest and let the Universe
Leap out of my heart, and then
Hand it to you on a silver platter
No matter
What it is that you seek to sing
About. Continue reading

Obsession

This is a poetic response (though kind of like slant rhyme, I’d call this a slant response, since it’s more of a take on the idea of obsession) to “Naked Echo” by David Pitchford. I also suggest checking out “Deep Rooted Want” written by Mother2Rah.

To want beyond the heart’s
Boundaries becomes murder

A Public Service Announcement
from the Founder

Okay, you’ve found the picture. Why not stay for the poetry?

I encourage you to either read my online chapbook, Open the Door, or my currently blogged poems. It won’t cost you anything, and you might read something you really like.

Saludos,

This was inspired by a poem on David Pitchford’s blog entitled “Swimmer” and a response written by Mother2Rah entitled “Tread Water”. I decided to take a crack at it (no pun intended) from the Kraken’s point of view. I would suggest you read their poems first before reading “Kraken”.

Before y’all say something, I am aware this is not in Chaucerian roundel style, as per my experiment for this week. You will see a post tonight, wrapping up the details of my experiment.
