Revolution Progress Update, 5/1/08

Well, yesterday was the last day of April, and I’ve written my 100 poems. 50 of them are posted here. The other fifty are chapbook material or stuff I am leaving aside to continue development on.

Overall, I’m glad I took the challenge. If nothing else, it forced me to produce. It forced me to write and really rethink the idea of what I could write about. I found ideas mostly jumping in front of me and presenting themselves easily. And I was able to silence my inner critic long enough to stop her from rejecting an idea before I wrote once I kept my focus on the 100 poem goal.

Oddly enough, I ended up with a mean case of writer’s block yesterday evening. With five left to write. I don’t know why - perhaps being so near to the goal line. Thank God, I got past it.

I have to thank David. This whole thing was his idea.

I want to do this again next year.

Gray skies overhead
Clash horribly with the smell
Of their barbecue.

Body

Body
Locked inside
My body
Slave to its desires
Its cravings
I can’t ignore it
Lest in the end
It ignores me

Tabloids

Misery
Loves company -
And companies
Love misery,
Especially those whose brightly colored
Rags beckon from the check-out counter.
I counter
Their gossip
With a look of disdain
As they profit from stardom’s pain.

Middletown, Ohio

It happened in Middletown.
It could happen in any steel mill town.
Strike.
Men and women
Strike,
And money flies out the window.
Honorable hands that did honorable work
Must find something else honorable
To do.
The town teeters on a paper’s edge
As a second wave sure thing -
ARMCO jobs, my man -
Is poised to be buried under a
Third wave tsunami
That could take out
A small town
Like Middletown.

Poetry

Sometimes,
I bleed
On paper
Instead
Of inside.
Will I
Hemorrhage
Whole books
Before
I die?
