Simone Beaubien at the Cantab Loung

Boston performance poet Simone Beaubien will be featuring at two of Columbus’ premier poetry venues next week.

She is a “decade-plus-veteran of the New England poetry scene” who brings the “arts of slam and storytelling simultaneously to the poetry stage”. In addition to performing, she is the Slam Master for the Boston Poetry Slam and host of the Wednesday night poetry night at the Cantab Lounge. She adds to this list of talents producer and slam coach. I can’t possibly fit everything that this woman does into one post without overwhelming you, so I urge you to go check out her bio.

And you will have not one, not two, but THREE chances to see her in Columbus. She’ll be featuring at Writing Wrongs Poetry Slam on Tuesday, May 18 and Writer’s Block Poetry on Wednesday, May 19. Additionally, she features with a set of ALL NEW POEMS at Writer’s Block First Draft on Friday, May 22. Either way, you will not want to miss her.

All shows begin at 8:00 PM. Writing Wrongs is held at the Urban Spirit Coffee Shop, located at 893 E Long St, Columbus, OH 43203 (View Map). Writer’s Block Poetry and WB First Draft are held at Kafe Kerouac, located at 2250 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43201 (View Map)

Writer’s Block First Draft Poetry Night, Friday February 13

Writer’s Block Poetry is having their next First Draft Poetry Night on Friday, February 13 at 8:00 P.M. Cover for this night is $3.00. This is a new poem only night hosted by WB’s own Joanna Schroeder – come out and get inspired or read your newest poetry! And the feature is….”Wonder Dave” Crady!

From Joanna Schroeder:

“For those of you who missed Wonder Dave’s amazing performance as one
of the Indie Finalists at the 2008 Rust Belt, he is a writer and
performer from Minneapolis. He has Represented Minnesota at two
National Poetry Slams and once at the Individual World Poetry Slam.
He’s performed at colleges and slams across the country. In addition
to being a writer Dave is also an accomplished comedic actor and
improvisor.

He also included the following quotes from his press clippings:

‘Wonder Dave Crady is a firecracker – a joyous, take-no-prisoners,
reveling in his geekdom, won’t back down from a fight against
intolerance firecracker. I think I’m a little in love with Wonder
Dave after this show.’ -Matthew Everett- fringefestival.org

‘Wonder Dave is a human carnival, the sort of host and performer
that commands attention even when he’s doing something mundane like
ordering a drink.’- -Vita.mn magazine

Clearly, you do not want to miss your chance to see what new work
Wonder Dave has up his sleeve.

His feature will be followed by the First Draft Open Mic, where new
poems and new poets are always welcome. Have you been furiously
scribbling haiku ever since last month’s show? Have you been
gathering your courage for years, and feel like you might finally be
ready for the mic? Whatever your story, we want to hear what your
poems have to say – so bring them out for a great show this Friday.”

It is all haiku. All NEW, NEVER PERFORMED BEFORE IN PUBLIC Haiku. An eight-poet, three-round haiku death match. And they are serious when they mean NEW Haiku only. Trust me…..you don’t want “old-ass ku” shouted at you from the audience.

An Open Mic Virgin No More!

In my introduction when I first started this blog, I said I would share the occasional personal experience or insight. In this vein, I will talk about my first open mic experience.

This past Wednesday, my fiance and I attended our first poetry open mic night. I’d had an idea to find open mic poetry events around Central Ohio, observe what goes on, and then when I felt a little less chicken, I would get up there and read myself. This one, courtesy of Writer’s Block Poetry, is held every Wednesday night at 8:00 PM at Kafe Kerouac in the Ohio State North Campus area in Columbus. Continue reading
